The AC joint, or Acromioclavicular Joint, is a joint between the acromion (part of the scapula that forms the highest point of the shoulder) and the clavicle.
If you are experiencing pain or hear a clicking sound in your shoulder you could have an AC joint injury.
an AC joint injury is commonly known as an AC joint dislocation, AC seperation or shoulder seperation; keep in mind that this is different than the more common 'shoulder dislocation' which refers to the dislocation of the Glenohumeral joint.
AC dislocation is common in contact sports such as football, hockey, rugby, snowboarding, mountain biking, horseback riding and more. AC dislocation are graded I to VI or 1-6.
Most AC joint injuries just require time and possibly some physical therapy to heal; more serious AC pain should be examined by a doctor, as it may be a sign that the injury is grade 4-6, which involves the displacement of the clavical and almost always requires surgery.
Does anyone out there have (or have had) AC joint pain that was medically diagnosed? What kind of physical therapy or surgery did you have to go through?
