If we could all just get together and have a cold one, perhaps all our problems would be solved. At least that’s what President Obama seems to be hoping in what’s now known as the “Beer Summit.”
The so-called Beer Summit took place Thursday afternoon, and included Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Cambridge, Mass., police Sgt. James Crowley. The meeting was to address the now-famous incident in which Crowley arrested Gates for “disorderly conduct” when investigating a possible burglary at Gates’ house. The charges against Gates were eventually dropped.

If you think you’re doing your body good by choosing bodybuilding supplements that are steroid-free, you might be mistaken.
The FDA recently released a warning regarding certain bodybuilding supplements which CLAIM to be steroid-free (or contain “steroid-like” ingredients) but do, in fact, contain synthetic steroids. Such products are often marketed as a “safe” alternative to anabolic steroids and an effective way to increase muscle mass. They are widely available in both online and retail stores. What’s more, these products often slip under the radar as “dietary supplements” when, in fact, they are unapproved new drugs that have not been reviewed by the FDA for safety and effectiveness.

Newsweek generated major buzz with its recent piece criticizing Oprah and other celebrities for their support of alternative medicine, such as bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. The article suggested that celebrities, with their huge followings, are sometimes persuading their fan base to adopt questionable medical theories without the science to back them up. But Newsweek might have better served its readership by offering women access to the leading medical experts and scientific studies on both sides of this issue.

You may have heard about the possibility of an excise tax being imposed on plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery procedures. It’s a tactic by the Senate Finance Committee to help raise money for the healthcare overhaul plan (which comes in at a hefty price tag of a trillion dollars).
