Spirulina platensis refers to a cyanobacterium that is rich in protein and has good nutritional value. Many cultures across ages have used Spirulina platensis. The Mayas and the Aztecs used it as an important part of their food. The Kanembu races, which reside along the Lake Chad, use it even today.

The cultivation of Spirulina platensis can be done both as a solid and a liquid culture. When it is cultivated as a liquid culture the optical density helps in the determination of the aqueous cultivation.
