Parotid Gland Tumor (Cancer)

A Parotid Gland Tumor is a cancer of the mouth. Considered highly treatable, a parotid gland tumor is painful but not considered life threatening (with treatment).

The most common parotid gland tumors are only found in the outer 'superficial' gland. Cancer in the gland can cause pain in the facial, because of a pinching effect on the facial nerves. The pain is usually compartmentalized to the side of the face in which the tumor is found.

Although parotid gland cancer is not considered deadly with treatment, it can still cause:
  • Paralysis of muscles used for facial expression
  • Damage to facial nerves resulting in loss of sensitivity
