When scientists first began exploring the goji berry, they quickly discovered not all goji berries are alike. It took a great deal of time to find the right strain of goji berry referred to so often in Ancient Asian health texts. Beginning with the botanical family known as Solanaceae, scientists further narrowed their choices to include only the desert-thorns of the genus Lycium (lye-SEE-um) based on descriptions of goji in ancient medical texts.
